2011 Brewers Jam
Saturday's hangover wasn't too bad and I slept most of it off by noon. The first order of business was retrieving my ride, left downtown overnight. By the time I returned home the line for KBJ was moving and I went inside about an hour later. The weather this year was perfect, sunny and around 70. It was unusual to pace myself, knowing I had an obligation that evening, but I managed 4-5 samples and a bbq sandwich from Sweet P's that satisfied my cravings. I talked to a few friends, visited a few displays, then got the hell out of there before I lost my discipline.
Thanks to Tag for the extra pass, cheers!

Knoxville Brewfest
Apparently not everyone in town is pleased with the addition of another Brew event, according to KnoxNews.com. And I must say that I have to side with Woodruff Brewing Company on this one, they were snubbed without cause. Not having one of our local brewers as a participant just because they're part of another, similar event doesn't make sense. But I think the organizers realize this and will make the right call next year and everything will be fine. At least I hope so.
Good luck Knoxville Brewfest! Maybe I'll see you next year...

What's that? Brewers Jam?
+ - Rossini Festival
X - Irish Festival
X - Feast with the Beasts
X - Wine on the Water
+ - Brewers Jam
Ok that's 2 for 5, not great but it could be worse. 40% is a failing mark but if it were .400 in baseball I'd be a star. It's all about perspective, man.

Wet & Sloppy BJ

Jesus Christ. Bad, bad idea. Some older women had gathered around these abandoned flops and prevented any attempt to break them loose. They may have been shit-faced. I certainly was.
Cheers!

What is old is new again

Ah, drinking games. The necessary caveat that allows timid drinkers young and old to somehow fool themselves into thinking that boozing requires some social secondary skill. Now, I've played nearly every drinking game in known space: Pyramids, Asshole, Up-the-River, Beer Pong, Beirut, Flip Cup, and the highly bizarre Egyptian Ratscrew. To be certain I have overlooked a few, but I'm not here to get into a pissing match with all seven or eight of you about competitive drinking.
Actually I am here to focus on an old favorite, Three-Man...made hip and relevant by our own 21st century bastardization--Consume & Forfeit. Most of the readers and authors have played this game together at one point. I like dice based drinking games due to portability and the utter lack of coordination when hammered that guarantees an atmosphere not unlike the stock market trading floor.

The banal Beerfest movie demonstrated and encouraged that even the thirty-something married lameass can mix it up with the Hebrew scientist, male prostitute, and sick fuck that views ham as a romantic date as well as foodstuff. We don't engage in drinking games everyday...no, rather we lay in the motherfucking weeds ready to strike when stepped on. (as the pussies before the Florida game will attest)
Anyhoo...here is our variation of Three-Man.
You will need a shitty table, with some inner square that serves as the playing surface. The shitty table provision is key, as it needs to be unbalanced and poorly made. The players should roll the dice to determine the poor dolt who begins the game as the namesake. The first player to roll a 2 and 1 fills this ignoble slot. If you need to speed things up, just allow the lowest roll to qualify. I've listed the potential outcomes below:
Any roll resulting in a 2 and 1 henceforth designates a new Three-Man. Probability dictates that 3's will show up most of the time...hammering the poor fool constantly.
A roll of 7=person to the left drinks
A roll of 11=person to right drinks
A roll of 10=everyone drinks
A roll resulting in doubles(snake-eyes, boxcars etc) allows the player to designate one person to drink the indicated sum, or split the individual die to two other players. It is discretionary to inflict the entire number of drinks or allow the other players a chance to roll the die to determine how much they consume. Be warned though, if the resulting penalty roll gets doubles then the original player has to drink the backlash.
Between hitting 3s and the other criteria above, typically someone will drink. After five successful rolls we usually make a rule and pass the turn. The rules are the common ones: no cursing, no first names, no pointing, some ridiculous screed to say before drinking and so forth. Be creative. Implement treaties and embargoes not unlike NATO.
If a player rolls anything not resulting in consumption, then the player can 'chance it' by rolling again...but if that second attempt is unsuccessful then the crowd will berate you as you drink and forfeit the turn.
As the game progresses, the rolls will inevitably get sloppy and result in the dice falling off the playing surface or table entirely. Filthy epithets and oaths usually follow...and again the player must consume and forfeit the turn.
This game gets ugly real fast...confusion will reign with too many rules, alliances will be made and broken, friendships will end...that sort of thing. Eventually the game will need a reset. Feel free to assign some activity to the non-drinking rolls, for example our group will quiz each other on a 9...always something esoteric that results in bad blood and soiled garments.
One thing is certain, if the game lasts more than thirty minutes each and every player will be blasted out of their mind. People will puke. Time will be lost. Lightweights will pass out only to be written on with a Sharpie.
Come to think of it, this game is horrible. Don't play it.

Gunter Schlierkamp
One thing we failed to mention about Knoxville Brewers Jam is that Gunter "Schlemmer" Schlierkamp of Beerfest was there. Okay not really there, but there was a huge, muscle-bound mofo that was almost as big. Whoever he was I don't think anybody was going to mess with him. We had a good laugh quoting "I remember my first bier" repeatedly before mocking the shitty beers that tasted like "the urine of a ram" or more simply, "rams piss".

Beerfest Review Mk Zwei

God, you luckless dandies and sit-down-pissers missed an afternoon party. Thanks to the bedshitting that is the football season, each of us 3,500 drunks in attendance were able to enjoy a fall Saturday in mutual fidelity and comradeship. As Mackey blogged earlier, this is the only time of the year that I can see fans of The Beatles and Dead mingle with supporters of The Clash and Iggy Pop...who in turn chug with Megadeth and Dethklok fans. Truly it is a halycon day.

Except for that queer sumbitch in the middle, it's like an invasion swarming your mined emplacements and murder holes. Christ, you drunks be patient!
Unlike Mackey, I did see some bad behavior. Look folks, when the cops catch you in a restricted area you are screwed. That's true of the beat cop, let alone the command level police officer that ran off a smartass couple and cited them for PI. I'm not a friend of oppressive law enforcement by any means, but when he gives you not one, but two chances to walk away...well then Neil Young and your Yoko of a wife, you need to take it. Seriously. I give props to KPD for showing calm and restraint. Only when pushed(figuratively) did this supervisor assert his authority. They and KFD demonstrated professionalism at this event.
Towards the end of the evening, following trips to see the UT-UGAy debacle, the weather petered out and became most sublime.

Nice. Real nice. This is one of the premier events of the year...and I don't say that just because the food vendors gave me free shit. It's a gentle atmosphere, best enjoyed from your pals in the industry:

Sumbitch it was hot outside the tents. Did I mention that? ESAD.
Knoxville Brewers Jam
Another hugely successful Brewers Jam is in the books. Saturday turned out to be a perfect day - the weather was hot and sunny, the beer was cold and plentiful, and everybody there had a great time. I had the privilege to sneak in a little bit ahead of time and see some things behind the scenes. While nothing about that was exciting, the best part of being there early was watching the gates open right at 1 pm and seeing the flood of people stream in and race to the beer tents. It looked like the last day of school let out and the kids were starting summer vacation.
The line wasn't as large as last year, mostly because the organizers chose to sell fewer tickets. I guess it worked out fine because the beer lines never backed up too long and there definitely was more open space to move around this year. There were also tons of police working to manage the crowd, and I only saw one incident where the police had to escort a man out but it was the most civil and easy-going situation I've ever witnessed. I never heard of anything else happening that day.
Like I said, it was a hot, sunny day. Luckily there was a cool breeze throughout the afternoon, but finding a spot in the shade of a beer tent was better than anything - you could refresh your beer and take a break from the heat.
Lots of people dressed up and this guy rocked the full "Beerfest" ensemble. There were beer goggles, beer t-shirts, beer hats, funky boots, goth girls & guys, 1970's starlets, punks, dweebs, losers, dickheads...you get the idea.
There were some favorite new beers, and some bad ones too. I was looking forward to the Old School ale by Asheville but found it way too sweet, however I was told the Shiva IPA was excellent. Lucky Kat IPA by Magic Hat was one of my favorites, Unibroue had some strong ales that everybody kept talking about. Thomas Creek, Highland Brewing, Catawba Valley, Foothills Brewing Company, Duck Rabbit and Yuengling were others I tried that all brought their A game.

And of course our local boys at Woodruff Brewing Company and Downtown Grill & Brewery represented in full force with 4 of their brews. IPA is my favorite and what I drank most of the time between sampling the other stuff.

24 Hours 'til KBJ

This is the entrance table where they will distribute the tiny glasses (about 3-4 oz) for "sampling" all the fine beer. This is also the starting line where the stampede of drunks rush the lawn to claim their picnic spots with blankets and chairs before hurrying to the vendors to get a head start on all the slow pokes not eager enough to show up hours ahead of time.
The weather forecast has been upgraded to Sunny and 83 degrees, so bring your sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, and maybe a folding chair. Or just flop directly on the ground when you feel necessary like I did last year. There is plenty of live music, some free giveaways, and food vendors too, so bring cash if you're planning to eat. I will dine on the southern delicacy that is: the Footlong Corndog. One thing about drinking as much beer as you can, as fast as you can, is that it tends to run through you at some point. There are the standard port-o-johns, but I believe they allow passes outside the gate and there are multiple restrooms at the adjacent World's Fair Park office just a few steps away. Try to taste as many brews as possible, be prepared for lines, enjoy some food, music and good weather. This is going to be a great beerfest.

KBJ Countdown: 4 Days...
The folks in Winston-Salem, NC have a pretty good local brewery to call their own. I was lucky enough to sample their brew a couple of years ago when visiting W-S for a Davis Cup tie with Lord von Lord. Arriving at the Joel Coliseum thirsty for a beer I was sorely disappointed when I got to the concession stand and saw the standard, shitty offerings of domestic beer. I was resigned to drinking this through the weekend if necessary, so I got us a couple of Butweipers and went to find our seats. It was only a few minutes later when we found our seats and noticed a beer vendor situated directly beside our entrance - it was Foothills Brewing. Fortune had spread her legs for us and we took full advantage of this offering. We drank their beer for 3 straight days and got our fill of the Salem Gold and Pilot Mountain Pale Ale.
These are both good beers and I suspect at least one of them to be on hand at KBJ this weekend, probably the Salem Gold. As you can see in the image above the alcohol volume is lower than a lot of beers and it is a light, easy drinking beer. Check out their website for a full list of their brews and hope they bring a couple you want to try. For example, I would like them to bring the Seeing Double IPA but it just ain't gonna happen. They have a nice list of seasonal brews that they could bring also: German Alt, Scottish Ale, Oktoberfest, Maibock, etc. Maybe even the Sexual Chocolate for no other reason to show off their impressive art work of a strong, black woman representing their Imperial Stout.
I returned to Winston-Salem earlier this year for another Davis Cup tie and stayed closer to town and was able to visit their brewery restaurant a few times. I practically lived there during my stay and recommend a visit if you happen to find yourself there (the fish & chips kick ass). I think I remember having their brown ale, definitely had their ESB, Pilsner and aforementioned Seeing Double IPA. Basically I don't think you will have a problem enjoying their beer. Just find a style that fits your taste and give it a try.

Rooked!

Why so serious?
First, the Vols are sucking major balls. The completely inept play is a reflection of the coaching staff's baffling stubborness to adapt to the 21st century game. Special teams have been awful(offal) for years. The Vols have given up seven TD's on returns since 2005. Despite reassurance from the staff those problems will be addressed, it never has been. There is no discipline on the field, particularly on offense and the defense is dreadful on third down. Couple these on-field issues with the UTAD's moronic handling of the head coach's contract in Summer and the fan base is in uproar:

Mass hysteria. Cats and dogs living together, as Dr. Venkman has stated.
Also locally, despite oil dropping to a relatively low 90-something a barrel, gas here is as scarce as in Max's post nuclear Australia. Look for bikers, assless chaps, and a dramatic shortage of blowers for muscle cars. This was my morning commute:

Whimsical, no?
Nationally speaking, the body politic reels in the bitter taste of rescues and bailouts of rich assholes and morons that don't understand interest rates and sub-prime lending. Even now, our fearless dolts debate a bill that will give 700 thousand million dollars of our money to these pricks. So, we have economic crises to deal with...plus Ivan and his rusting arsenal rattling his Cossack swords, high energy costs, Lindsay and SamRo, and the always evident threat of alien invasion without the necessary weaponry to repel the ravenous hordes:

Truly these are interesting times, or so the fortune cookie has told me.
Anyhoo, one might ask if there is anything good going on right now. The answer gentle reader is yes. Oktoberfest. Let us all channel the goodwill and drinking karma from Munich...

In short, the authors here believe in one simple and salient truth: When the shit hits the fan, you DRINK YOUR WAY THROUGH IT.

Our Saving Brews
We are going to do a small preview of some of the attending breweries, it won’t including everything, sort of a must hit before it’s gone. You have to prioritize your booth route by what you must have and when it might run out. This will show some of my favorites in no order, so you can decide on your own, whose line you will be waiting in and which ones you will let be drank by others.
First:

All around quality brewery, nothing outstanding, nothing undrinkable. Well brewed products that you are happy to see at somebody’s party, but never the thing you’re jumping up and down excited over. They make a group of very drinkable beers that aren’t to edgy, but that is more of what we need, there are too many imperial vanilla eight hop pilsners if there’s even one. I recommend the St. Terese’s Pale Ale, or the Kashmir IPA, the Gaelic Ale is only palatable at best and readily available in town.
Second:
Heading in a complete different direction are these unbalanced canines. Let me start with the fact their Founder was good friends with Hunter S. Thompson, and Ralph Steadman does their art work too. Check out their website and read their story if that does not paint a good enough picture for you. Problem is their art work and beer names are more memorable than the beer, but only sometimes. If you can find the Horn Dog barley wine or Kerberos triple you're in luck, any of their ales are good, but I am not a fan of their In Heat Wheat.

Great Drunks of the Silver Screen 2.1
Name: Barry Badrinath
The ensuing scene of him seducing Monique is comic gold. Barry and the rest of the boys continue to drink their way into shape: they train by drinking ram piss, they form a party brigade, they drink daily, they brew their own beer. Eventually they make it to Beerfest where they triumph over the Germans and all ends well. Badrinath is the catalyst that pushes the team to victory - all because he turns his back on the evil notion of sobriety and chooses alcohol to overcome his demons. Thank you Broken Lizard, lesson learned.
