Could it be? Party liquor rain?

Tonight, at Patrick Sullivans down in the Old City, we'll be watching the chart-toppin' master troubadour belt out his shit. I suggest that anyone with some free time and a powerful need to drink get "they ass" down there. Sumbitch puts on a show, I'll give him that.

More info can be found at http://www.unknownhinson.com/

Technically he's magnificent. I just hope this time the damn drunk who puked all over the damn bathroom at the last show makes it to a stall this time.

Thursday Hangover

Man do I love holiday weekends. Not only do you get that extra day off work, but when you return you have a shortened work week. Of course there is the possibility of extra work that you have to catch up on since you were out a day (or more) so you have to weigh your particular situation. In my case, missing 3 days of work caused a considerable amount of extra work to do this week, which naturally sucks. Enough bitching though.

Looking back over the past few days there were some ups and downs. The biggest disappointment occurred when my beloved keg of IPA went dry at the start of the holiday weekend (not some upset loss on Monday night). Luckily the next best thing was available as backup: growlers of IPA. One of the pluses of hanging around drunks with similar tastes is that you're never too far away from that next favorite beer.

Thanks to Tag Berauscht and King Randall the Insufferable for supplying the beer on Monday. Though we lost the game, it was a good time and booze always helps soften the aches of defeat. Plus we almost had a full house of all the authors, with Scarlett O'Harlot away in Las Vegas probably trying to score a full house at the tables, or more likely black jack.

Lord von Lord already covered our visit to the Southern Graces Skybox. It has lots of potential to establish itself as a trendy, hip lounge if enough people are willing to pay higher prices for the view and unique location. The name could be better, and I agree with the readers who suggested "1982" a few weeks ago. Expect more updates from the authors.

And tonight is the glorious return of live, for-real, regular season, mutha-effin', NFL football. I'm fired up and will be in front of the TV salivating like a hyena over a fresh wildebeest carcass. One of the best sports blogs in the country, Kissing Suzy Kolber, sums it up best here. These guys cover and explain the NFL the way you wish you could see it on TV - not for the timid or PC.

So I'll have my booze, beer and snacks ready to go tonight at 7:00 PM. The only drawback is that it is on at about the same time as the US Open match of Andy Roddick vs. Novak Djokovic in the QFs. Most of you may sneer at the comparison of a tennis match vs. NFL football, but this is the final grand slam event of the year and actually a really good matchup. Still don't care? Think tennis if full of pansy-boys? Well take a look at this muscle...

Yeaaah! Andy Murray of Scotland will whup that ass if you think so. He is serious. And tough. Look at that scruffy beard!! Take a good look, 'cause he's about to lose to Rafa Nadal in tomorrow night's semi-final match.
Drink up!!

Sundown 2.0- The Contrarian View

On the heels of Mackey's post regarding Sundown minutia, I feel compelled to add some thoughts on this once-relevant activity.

Sundown in the City has been hashed out on many local blogs and message boards, and a variety of viewpoints and opinions have surfaced. Too many kids, we should welcome the kids, not enough places to get a drink, too much drinking, etc. and so forth throughout perpetuity.

Allow me to give the more or less official view of Sundown from the bloggers here:

It now sucks.

A little background is necessary. The authors here break the year down into boozing seasons and Sundown was the proverbial spring of drinking, just as it coincides with the onset of the common Springtime. It's a time to shake off the doldrums of winter, see old friends that come out of hibernation, watch some cool regional and nationally renown bands, end up at the patio of the Downtown Grill and Brewery. Rinse and repeat. Up until a few years ago, the crowd seemed a friendly mixture of powerdrinkers and sophisticated music fans co-existing in a fun atmosphere. Now, it's a draconian exercise in KPD and the city's desire to regulate their responsibility and fun. Also you can't swing a cat without hitting drunkass teenagers and students. (hypocrisy disclaimer-while the authors were once punkass underage drinkers ourselves, we were much much cooler than the chumps and chumpettes that do so now, so suck it!)

Mackey has alluded to the rules regarding bottled water and paying for the 'privilege' to drink in addition to the product itself. Absurd. I can understand the mentality of these events even if I don't agree with them. Just like Rossini, the powers that be want you to have to complete Heraklean labors to just get a fucking beer. Stand in line for a wristband, stand in line for a ticket, stand in line for a beer. It all takes precious time that frankly we don't have in a mass of peeps.

While the lineups in years past have been great(Drive-By Truckers, Gin Blossoms to name a couple) and this year is no exception, the crowd has simply outgrown the venue. It's a hot sticky concrete canyon and is hotter than balls. It makes my friends that live downtown miserable simply by virtue of having thousands of folks in their grill.

I can understand the great passion that many people have for Sundown, even now...and respect that viewpoint. But for the professional drunkard, eschew the show, find a barstool and hunker the fuck down.

Sundown

I took an early walk through Market Square yesterday as Sundown in the City was preparing for the evening and noticed a few things:
  • People openly drinking on the way to the event - good for them!
  • Bag checkers will not let you bring in a bottle of water (not me, some other guy)
  • $1 wrist bands at ID check - so now I have to pay for the privilege to drink a beer?
  • Cops huddled in a group not doing a damn thing
  • Knoxville has at least one of those stupid robot "performers" on the square
  • Strange but artistic graffiti on Wall Street
  • Awful beer selection

Of course I didn't stay around for the music; I had people coming over to drink beer at my place. I would show pictures to enhance this post but my camera batteries died, my laptop is already crashed, so I'm basically facked all 'round.

Thursday's Excuse & The Mic

Monday Hangover will have to wait...

This weekend got an early start when we decided to go out on Thursday to whoop it up for no particular reason. It was rainy and cold, Sundown in the City was relocated, and there weren’t throngs of people crowding the streets or bars – a perfect scenario for some solid drinking.

The night got off to a bad start. I had made plans with Tag to have some drinks indoors before going out, what we refer to as “front loading” (thank you Modern Drunkard Magazine). I laid down to rest for a few minutes before he arrived and went straight to sleep. Not a problem usually, but I had left my phone in another room and didn’t hear it ring when he called to be let into my place. So I fucked up that part of the evening and collected about 10,000 prick points for my nap. I blame the couch. Later I end up meeting King Randall The Insufferable downtown at our local spot. We were joined by a few of the usual suspects and before long we are already using “the mic” to start trouble. When I say “the mic” I am referring to our imaginary microphone styled in the 1970s era – the long, skinny kind most people would associate with Bob Barker of Price is Right fameOurs is similar but we modeled ours after Memphis wrestling announcing legend Lance “Banana Nose” Russell seen here with longtime color announcer / weatherman Dave Brown
Okay, so ours is really just a couple of clear, plastic straws with a cocktail stirrer attached at the top. I regret not having a photo of this technologically advanced instrument to share with you. We almost always follow the wrestling genre of conversation by invoking past “rasslin” legends and all the show-talk that goes with it. We find it hilarious, our neighbors….that’s probably a different story. The volume goes up as the drinks go down. We recruited the “Human Buzz Saw” to participate and she did not disappoint. At 5’2”, 95 lbs this girl is an attack force of verbal smack talk – and that’s just any day without drinking or being prodded to act up. She was all revved up Thursday and we had a blast, even bringing other tables into the fray for the first time. We should have started a Battle Royale of Drinking right there on the spot but apparently that has been set in motion for a completely separate event on its own. I can’t wait. Trinken!!
