This can't possibly go wrong

Courtesy of those wacky Germans that now own PlayMobil, I give you this:

Gotta love the Periodic Table of wine.

Behold the Wine-Tasting Party Playset. This gem of toy goodness is currently stirring up controversy with the uptight brigade, feeling that this particular series will glamorize drinking to children. While I have mixed feelings on kids being around booze( oh yes, we all know that) I'm not sure this is something for society to get worked up over.

You see, these PlayMobil things have been around in some form or fashion since I was a kid. It's a bastard amalgam of Fisher Price and the Lego figurines in obscure settings. There was even a McDonald's playset many years ago that presumably demonstrated the joy of food service to an entire cadre of sullen Gen X'ers like yours truly. Using such ahem, logic, I can only auger that the wine playset won't make kids want to booze it up more than they might already. After all, most parents that knee-jerk against this kind of harmless item are the ones whose drunken barbarism is evident for little Dakota, Montana, and Chas to see every weekend. Hypocrisy is a bitch.

In a practical vein, this specific toy doesn't seem like it would hold a child's attention very well. What rugrat can pull his or her fat ass away from GTA 4 long enough to note the carafe, wine rack, and awful brown shoes...deciding right then and there for a life of unrepentant boozing and shitty behavior? *That usually comes later...with a delicious can of Coors Original but I digress*

Anyhoo...this little item might be better off for adults. The possibilities are endless. You can rehearse your pick-up lines, or wargame social scenarios without an actual bar tab. Lonely? Not anymore with these guys on your kitchen table. Give them weird names, if that twirls your beanie. They even bend at the waist so you can even simulate a horrific puking episode at the frat house.

Fuck it. I'm getting one so the authors can re-enact the weekend for your viewing pleasure.

What is old is new again

Ah, drinking games. The necessary caveat that allows timid drinkers young and old to somehow fool themselves into thinking that boozing requires some social secondary skill. Now, I've played nearly every drinking game in known space: Pyramids, Asshole, Up-the-River, Beer Pong, Beirut, Flip Cup, and the highly bizarre Egyptian Ratscrew. To be certain I have overlooked a few, but I'm not here to get into a pissing match with all seven or eight of you about competitive drinking.

Actually I am here to focus on an old favorite, Three-Man...made hip and relevant by our own 21st century bastardization--Consume & Forfeit. Most of the readers and authors have played this game together at one point. I like dice based drinking games due to portability and the utter lack of coordination when hammered that guarantees an atmosphere not unlike the stock market trading floor.

The banal Beerfest movie demonstrated and encouraged that even the thirty-something married lameass can mix it up with the Hebrew scientist, male prostitute, and sick fuck that views ham as a romantic date as well as foodstuff. We don't engage in drinking games everyday...no, rather we lay in the motherfucking weeds ready to strike when stepped on. (as the pussies before the Florida game will attest)

Anyhoo...here is our variation of Three-Man.

You will need a shitty table, with some inner square that serves as the playing surface. The shitty table provision is key, as it needs to be unbalanced and poorly made. The players should roll the dice to determine the poor dolt who begins the game as the namesake. The first player to roll a 2 and 1 fills this ignoble slot. If you need to speed things up, just allow the lowest roll to qualify. I've listed the potential outcomes below:

Any roll resulting in a 2 and 1 henceforth designates a new Three-Man. Probability dictates that 3's will show up most of the time...hammering the poor fool constantly.

A roll of 7=person to the left drinks

A roll of 11=person to right drinks

A roll of 10=everyone drinks

A roll resulting in doubles(snake-eyes, boxcars etc) allows the player to designate one person to drink the indicated sum, or split the individual die to two other players. It is discretionary to inflict the entire number of drinks or allow the other players a chance to roll the die to determine how much they consume. Be warned though, if the resulting penalty roll gets doubles then the original player has to drink the backlash.

Between hitting 3s and the other criteria above, typically someone will drink. After five successful rolls we usually make a rule and pass the turn. The rules are the common ones: no cursing, no first names, no pointing, some ridiculous screed to say before drinking and so forth. Be creative. Implement treaties and embargoes not unlike NATO.

If a player rolls anything not resulting in consumption, then the player can 'chance it' by rolling again...but if that second attempt is unsuccessful then the crowd will berate you as you drink and forfeit the turn.

As the game progresses, the rolls will inevitably get sloppy and result in the dice falling off the playing surface or table entirely. Filthy epithets and oaths usually follow...and again the player must consume and forfeit the turn.

This game gets ugly real fast...confusion will reign with too many rules, alliances will be made and broken, friendships will end...that sort of thing. Eventually the game will need a reset. Feel free to assign some activity to the non-drinking rolls, for example our group will quiz each other on a 9...always something esoteric that results in bad blood and soiled garments.

One thing is certain, if the game lasts more than thirty minutes each and every player will be blasted out of their mind. People will puke. Time will be lost. Lightweights will pass out only to be written on with a Sharpie.

Come to think of it, this game is horrible. Don't play it.

Pool Pong

As with any competitive sport, the only way to improve one's Beer Pong skills is to practice. And, as Mackey pointed out recently, players now have the option of practicing via Nintendo Wii, although I agree with him that, even though Virtual Beer Pong may be an option, that doesn't mean it's worth two shits. (I'm paraphrasing.)

However, even if you are using the Wii version of Beer Pong to "train," there comes a time when you must put down the (fucking) video game and play some (motherfucking) Beer Pong. And for that, you need a table.

Or do you?

Introducing: The Portopong.

Okay, so it's not exactly "regulation size," and the hanging-it-from-a-tent suggestion looks rather lame (when you could just as easily bring a folding table), but for an afternoon at the pool or lake, this looks like the way to go!

Just In Case You Need to Practice

I love technology. JV Games has created a "beer pong" (Beirut) video game compatible with Wii gaming systems. I noticed this story a while back and disregarded it since I don't have a Wii and haven't played a video game in over 5 years. I appreciate their tacit endorsement of a common drinking game, but I'm curious who is going to be playing this version of the game and why.

Is it conceivable to play the game and drink as you go? I guess so. Seems to take the fun out of setting up the table, pouring the drinks, chasing errant ping pong balls across the room, etc. I suppose you can still have your friends over to drink and talk a bunch of yang. Maybe I'm not "hip" or "with it", or just too old to appreciate the modern twist. Has anyone seen or played this Wii pong? Is it anything like the live puppet shows that take place on that black box in my living room?

Olympic Drinking

Fucking China. I was debating on maybe trying to capitalize on the ubiquitous and nauseating amounts of coverage NBC and their whores will hoist upon us beginning...well today actually. To be honest, I am not sure if I should punish my liver for the sins of the orient.

I'm on record as stating this Olympics will have some sort of calamity written all over it.(No I am not referring to the shit paper ripped from a teletubbies episode) Many blogs that I read are of the same opinion, although you wouldn't know much of it from the so-called regular media. These asshats can't grovel fast enough to the Chicoms, while giving lip service to freedom of the press yada yada yada. Being born on the day of the Munich Massacre, I claim clairvoyance on this esoteric and narrow project. There have been the standard reports of pollution, violence at checkpoints, and general commie fuckery. I'm still pulling for some exotic disaster, perhaps a dragon war or the appearance of Zombie Genghis Khan, you know...a real fuckup of Jovian proportion.

Anyhoo. I thought I might try and enlist the group into some of sort of drinking game for the Olympics. Not the faggotry that some locals think of as drinking games, this is strict power boozing and low-key jackassery. Perhaps a beer or shot for every gold medal the USA brings back( I believe that was around 36 or so for the 2004 Summer Games) at the conclusion of ceremonies. Then again, my heart really isn't into it...and to be honest, I'll probably drink that much anyway. So, to close this pointless entry, I've included an image of mostly humorous drunken acts that might be construed as athletic competition. Well, at the Delta Tau Chi house.

Drinking Nostalgic

You know what I haven't done in a really long time? Power Hour. In fact, it's been too damn long. I'm bringing Power Hour (and also, sexy) back.

I'm predicting that Lord von Lord just rolled his eyes.

If you've never done a Power Hour before (meaning, if you never went to college), then you've missed out on an efficient and somewhat organized method for getting drunk. It's binge-drinking, but on a schedule.

For the unenlightened: Power Hour is a drinking game (and I'm using the term "game" loosely), in which the participants take a shot of beer every minute, for a solid hour. Yes, that's 60 shots of beer in 60 minutes, and if you do it right (1.5-oz. shots), you'll get through roughly 7.5 beers. (Or, if you're a lightweight like me, you can do half shots, and you'll get through almost 4. Which is still respectable, but only if you're a girl.)

As for keeping track of the minutes, you have two options. One, you can keep an eye on a digital clock, and take a drink every time it changes. This tends to be somewhat tedious, and is usually an exercise in futility after the first 20 or so shots. Two (and this is the preferred method), you can obtain one of those Power Hour Remixes, which is basically a playlist (or CD) of 60 songs, with each song playing for exactly 60 seconds before changing to the next. The participants just take a shot every time a new song starts! (Ingenious.)

Now, I have heard of folks playing Power Hour with liquor before, but I wouldn't recommend it. The idea of Power Hour is to get shitfaced, not dead. (Of course, you could always take a shot of liquor every ten minutes for an hour, but that's still a lot of booze for yours truly. The other contributors to this blog would call that "Lunch Hour.")

I've also heard of the Power Fifteen, in which you take a shot of wine every minute, for 15 minutes. Seriously though, people. Who the hell shoots wine?

I'll stick to the beer, thank you very much.

And with that, I'm off to find a good 60-minute remix. It's Power Hour time!
